Le défenseur français Raphaël Varane, champion du monde 2018, a annoncé, mercredi, sa retraite sportive à l’âge de 31 ans.
« Je suis tombé et je me suis relevé mille fois, et cette fois c’est le moment d’arrêter et de raccrocher les crampons après mon dernier match où j’ai remporté un trophée à Wembley », a-t-il indiqué sur son compte Instagram en référence à sa victoire avec Manchester United en Coupe d’Angleterre au printemps, avant son transfert cet été à Côme, en Italie, club avec lequel il n’a disputé qu’un match.
Formé au Racing Club de Lens, le natif de Lille a rejoint le Real Madrid en 2011. En Espagne, il a disputé 360 rencontres sous les couleurs merengues et a remporté 17 titres, dont trois Ligues des champions (2014, 2016 et 2017) et trois Liga (2012, 2017 et 2020).
Parallèlement à son aventure madrilène, il rejoint les Bleus en mars 2013. Un maillot qu’il a porté à 93 reprises et avec lequel il a notamment remporté la Coupe du monde 2018. Il a mis fin à son aventure en équipe de France après la Coupe du monde 2022, à 29 ans.
Varane a rejoint Manchester United en 2021. Avec le club anglais, il a ajouté une Coupe de la Ligue en 2023 et une Coupe d’Angleterre en 2024 à son palmarès.
