La NASA a officialisé sa mission SR-1 Freedom pour décembre 2028. Ce projet enverra un vaisseau à propulsion nucléaire électrique vers la planète rouge pour y déployer la mission Skyfall et ses trois hélicoptères. L'objectif est de valider cette technologie critique pour les futurs voyages habités et l'exploration lointaine, en réutilisant du matériel de la station lunaire Gateway.
