The LA Clippers have announced that their trade involving Kawhi Leonard with the Toronto Raptors will not be completed until the NBA finishes its investigation into whether the team circumvented the salary cap. The deal, agreed to on June 30, would send Leonard to Toronto in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks. In a statement, the Clippers said the trade "can only be finalized if the Raptors' ownership group assumes the risk of penalties related to Kawhi's contract that could theoretically result from the ongoing investigation." Toronto declined to do that. The Raptors said they would wait for the league's findings rather than take on that risk, but added that they "remain eager to bring Kawhi back to Toronto and look forward to a swift resolution for our players, our organization, and our fans." The NBA is investigating whether the Clippers circumvented the salary cap by funneling money to Leonard through his $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration, a now-bankrupt green banking startup involved in a massive federal fraud scandal. The company also had a separate $300 million, 23-year endorsement agreement with the Clippers. The Clippers team owner, Steve Ballmer, who invested $60 million in Aspiration, has denied having any knowledge of Leonard's endorsement deal. According to ESPN, Leonard and his uncle and business adviser, Dennis Robertson, have both been interviewed as part of the investigation. There is currently no timetable for when the NBA's probe will be completed.
