Samsung has posted an ‘End of Service Announcement' notice on its website, revealing that the Samsung Messages app will be discontinued in July 2026. The company is also urging Galaxy users to switch to Google Messages for a more consistent messaging experience.
Over the past few years, Samsung and Google have worked closely to expand RCS availability on Android devices. As part of this collaboration, Samsung began making Google Messages the default messaging app on newer Galaxy devices. Newer phones like

How to switch from Samsung Messages to Google Messages
To switch to Google Messages on your Galaxy device, follow these steps:
Click here to find the app on the Google Play Store.
Install the Google Messages app and open it once the installation is complete.
When you open the app for the first time, you will see a prompt that says, âTo use Messages, make it your default SMS app.â Tap Set default SMS app.
On the next screen, select Google Messages (it has a white icon with a blue conversation bubble).
Tap Set as default to confirm.

Note 1: If your device is running Android 12 or Android 13, the Google Messages app may not automatically appear in the home screen dock. You may need to manually drag it from the app drawer to the dock. On some devices there may be a temporary discontinuation in RCS service during the switch.
Note 2: Messages won't sync to your Galaxy Watch if it is running the Tizen operating system. Those include all Galaxy Watches launched before the Galaxy Watch 4.
