Samsung’s flagship smartphones from 2021, the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra are getting a new software update, and it brings the January 2025 security patch to these devices, making them more secure than before.
The South Korean tech giant has released the update for the carrier-locked variants of the three devices, which have model numbers SM-G991U, SM-G996U, and SM-G998U, and it changes their firmware versions to G991USQSEGXLB, G991USQSEGXLB, G991USQSEGXLB. The January 2025 security patch fixes a ton of security issues.
If you have a carrier-locked version of the Galaxy S21 for the US, your phone might have already sent you a notification about the latest software update. Click on it to get the new firmware. If your phone hasn’t sent one, you can check for the new update by going to Settings » Software update » Download and install.

You can also download the new firmware from our firmware section and install it on your Galaxy S21 using the Odin software on a Windows PC. The Galaxy S21 is eligible to get the Android 15-based One UI 7.0 update. Samsung is expected to start rolling it out to eligible devices after the next Galaxy Unpacked event, where it will launch the Galaxy S25.
