It's only been a day since Verizon, the largest mobile carrier in the US, enabled satellite text messaging for the Galaxy S25 series. This service enables users to send text messages even when they're outside the coverage area of terrestrial cellular networks.
There's been a great push from carriers recently to bring satellite connectivity to smartphones. It will provide their subscribers with the peace of mind that they would have some semblance of connectivity with the outside world when they're in a remote region with no cell coverage.
Smartphone manufacturers like Samsung and many others have integrated the relevant hardware in their devices to ensure compatibility with these services. It goes without saying that we'll see a great presence of satellite communication features in future smartphones from most major smartphone makers in the industry.
Two other carriers that you wouldn't have expected to see alongside Verizon in this capability have now enabled the same for the Galaxy S25 series. Owners of Samsung's latest flagship phones now have access to the satellite messaging service on Xfinity and Spectrum Mobile.
Xfinity and Spectrum Mobile have launched their satellite messaging service in collaboration with Skylo, a service provider for non-terrestrial networks. It's the very same company that worked on the Pixel 9's Satellite SOS feature with Google.
As of right now, users on both carriers can only access emergency messaging services when their device is not connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network. However, the carriers do confirm that they will bring the ability to send and receive SMS text messages over satellite on the Galaxy S25 “in the coming weeks.”
