It seems like Samsung may have re-engaged in a race for slimness, and according to a fresh rumor, the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be the slimmest Fold model ever made. However, this achievement will supposedly come at a cost.
The rumor (via @kro_roe) suggests that Samsung will downgrade the S Pen experience for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 to make it the slimmest Fold model ever.
What kind of S Pen downgrade will the Galaxy Z Fold 7 suffer? That part is unclear. The Fold series already lacks a dedicated S Pen holster, so there doesn't seem to be a lot of wiggle room in this area.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6, which you could buy today, has a 5.6mm profile when unfolded. The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, released only in Korea and China (under a different name), measures 4.9mm when unfolded.
The Special Edition model is the slimmest Samsung foldable phone to ever go on sale, and it lacks S Pen support altogether. Presumably, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be even thinner than the Special Edition model.
Samsung did slim down the Galaxy S25 Ultra, but whether or not this was thanks to its S Pen Bluetooth downgrade remains in question. A recent teardown suggests that the S Pen's Air Actions downgrade may have had little to do with the phone becoming thinner.
Samsung seems to focus more on slimming down its mobile devices this year. For one, the upcoming Galaxy S25 Edge is expected to be very thin.
Furthermore, competitors like Oppo are creating super slim foldable phones. The Fold-like Oppo Find N5 is said to measure somewhere around 4mm or less. Samsung might be folding under this pressure and may have decided to rejoin the race for slimness, for better or for worse.
Do keep in mind that this is an unconfirmed rumor at this point, and whether or not Samsung will sacrifice S Pen features in favor of creating the thinnest Galaxy Z Fold ever remains to be determined.
Granted, considering recent events, the narrative sounds familiar. But it might also be just a shot in the dark. So take it with a pinch of salt. We'll let you know if we find out more.
