MediaTek has unveiled two new mid-range smartphone chips: Dimensity 7400 and Dimensity 7400X. These chips are successors to last year's Dimensity 7300 and Dimensity 7300X chips and offer improved power efficiency. They also support Google's Ultra HDR image and video format.
The Dimensity 7400 and the Dimensity 7400X are fabricated using TSMC's 4nm (N4P) process technology, offering improved power efficiency for longer battery life. They both have an octa-core CPU featuring four Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.6GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores running at 2GHz. The high-performance Cortex-A78 cores are clocked 100MHz higher than the Dimensity 7300 series.
Both chips feature the Mali-G615 MC2 GPU, which features Adaptive Gaming Technology 3.0 for more power-efficient gaming. Thanks to the MiraVision 955 display signal processor (DSP), the new chips can drive Full HD+ screens at a 144Hz refresh rate. They are compatible with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.
The MediaTek Imagiq 950 image signal processor (ISP) inside these chips supports up to 200MP camera sensors. It supports up to 4K 30fps video recording with EIS and 12-bit HDR. It supports Google's Ultra HDR format, which helps preview, capture, and share images and videos in a high dynamic range (HDR). Samsung calls Google's Ultra HDR format Super HDR, and it debuted with the Galaxy S24 series last year.
The built-in NPU 655 offers 15% better AI performance compared to last year's chips (Dimensity 7300 and Dimensity 7300X).
The 5G modem built into these Dimensity chips supports 5G NR sub-6GHz (peak download speeds of 3.27Gbps) and worldwide 4G LTE. The chips also support several GNSS systems: BeiDou, Galileo, GLONASS, GPS, NavIC, and QZSS. They also feature Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and a USB 2.0 port.
Mid-range smartphones based on these new chips will be launched in the first quarter of 2025. So, expect to see some of those phones before the end of March. Samsung isn't expected to use this chip, as it prefers using in-house Exynos chips for phones like the Galaxy A56.
