During a recent Galaxy Watch 8 media briefing in Seoul, Samsung discussed its smartwatch strategy and how its Galaxy Watches are different from wearables made by Chinese competitors. The company also confirmed that it is already thinking about the future Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch 10 models through the lens of its long-term strategy.
Regarding competitors from China, Samsung's Jong Min Choi said that Chinese brands and Samsung MX have different approaches. While competitors from China focus on battery life at the cost of performance and features, Samsung's aim with the Galaxy Watch series is to deliver higher performance and better functions.
“I think the reason Chinese companies' market share is increasing is because of low power consumption rather than sensor technology,” said the Samsung Executive Director (via Sisa Journal).
We are focused on providing high-quality healthcare with BioActive sensors.
Meanwhile, Chinese smartwatch brands found a niche in wearables with long-lasting battery, but this comes at a cost. Many such devices use “very low-power chips called microcontroller units (MCUs), but their performance is much lower.”
In contrast, each new Galaxy Watch brings enhanced health and fitness-related features, and one of the latest additions is the Antioxidant Index, introduced with the Galaxy Watch 8 and One UI 8 Watch.
Clever features that bring value to customers aren't created overnight. Advanced health functions, such as the new Antioxidant Index, are prepared years in advance.
According to Mr. Jong Min Choi, the Antioxidant Index “is actually the result of five years of research.” This shows Samsung's commitment to its long-term strategy of developing advanced features, even if it takes years to achieve the desired outcome.
The history of the Antioxidant Index also reflects how Samsung's approach to creating smartwatches differs from that of its Chinese competitors.
Given this long-term approach to researching and developing, it stands to reason that Samsung is already working on the next best thing.
And, indeed, Mr. Choi confirmed that the development team is already planning new technologies and discussing which ones are closer to commercialization for future Galaxy Watch models.
“[…] We are discussing with the product planning team the parts of the technology that are closer to commercialization and plan to include them in future products such as the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch 10.”
The Galaxy Watch 8 lineup recently rolled out globally, and Samsung will likely announce the Galaxy Watch 9 in a year from now.
In closing, Samsung said it will continue developing the Galaxy Watch “with pride” and focus on creating new features that benefit users.
