Chinese competition has been getting tough for Samsung across many of its business segments. They're aggressively undercutting Samsung on price for legacy memory products, rapidly advancing their OLED technology to counter the Korean giant's dominance, and giving it a tough time in the semiconductor market as well.
Samsung has to be on its toes to ensure that its dominance in advanced display technologies remains. That's why the company is believed to be pushing for the commercialization of its QD-EL technology ahead of the moves it anticipates the Chinese display companies will make. They've already begun working on this display technology as well.
The QD-EL or Quantum Dot Electroluminescent technology is similar to OLED displays but uses quantum dots as the light source. This delivers some distinct advantages over OLEDs, resulting in TVs that are brighter, more vibrant, and likely more cost effective to produce.
Samsung has been working on this technology for some time now. It did show off an 18.2-inch QD-EL display at Displayweek last year. That panel was produced through an inkjet-printing process and utilized cadmium-free quantum dots. Commercialization is the next key step so that it can start selling products in the market featuring this new display technology.
To that end, Samsung Electronics is reportedly working closely with affiliate companies including Samsung Advanced Research Institute and Samsung Display. The aim is to commercialize this technology within the next few years.
Samsung is far from the only company that's working on QD-EL displays. China's TCL CSoT also showed off a 14-inch inkjet-printed QD-EL panel at Displayweek 2024, showcasing that the Chinese aren't that far behind.
