For at least the past 2-3 years, Samsung has been showcasing dual-folding smartphone prototypes. It was expected that the company would launch such a device for consumers. However, that hasn't happened yet.
Our dreams could finally come true, as Samsung has reportedly planned to launch its first dual-foldable phone/tablet hybrid device this year.
A report from South Korea claims that Samsung is planning to launch a dual-foldable phone in the second half of this year. Unlike Huawei's dual-folding phone, Samsung's dual-foldable device reportedly folds twice inwards (like the shape of G). This form factor has its advantages, as it doesn't have outward folding edges covered by a screen. Hence, it is more durable than an S-shaped foldable device.
It will have a regular phone-like screen when it is fully folded. When completely unfolded, it will resemble a large-screen tablet. It isn't clear if the device will have a separate cover screen.
Samsung is said to be planning to unveil the device alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in mid-2025. The foldable screen on the device will be made by Samsung Display, Samsung Electronics' display manufacturing division. The hinges for the device are being tested by multiple brands, including Korea's FineMtech and KH Vatec and China's Huanli.
The report also claims that Samsung will not use an under-display camera on its dual-folding device. Samsung is reportedly planning to manufacture less than 300,000 units of this upcoming foldable phone.
The story continues after our Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition video below.
An industry insider said that a dual-foldable device will have many more parts than existing foldable phones. Moreover, it will also need special software features and optimizations so that the UI and apps scale well across the screen in all modes (fully folded, half-folded, and completely open).
Hence, the device's price will be much higher than that of existing foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition.
