In recent years, Samsung hasn't put too much effort into slimming down its smartphones. There are some exceptions, like foldable phones, and it's not like Samsung's slab-type flagships are unreasonably thick or haven't gotten any thinner.
Nevertheless, it's safe to say that thinness hasn't been one of Samsung's top priorities, generally speaking. But it looks like that's about to change.
Samsung teased a brand-new entry into its Galaxy S series at Unpacked 2025 in San Jose. It's called the Galaxy S25 Edge (rather than S25 Slim), and it's not yet available. As a matter of fact, Samsung hasn't said much about its specifications. However, the company seemingly emphasized the phone's thin profile in its teasers.
To be precise, Samsung didn't say exactly how thin the Galaxy S25 Edge is, but it's safe to say it's thinner than the rest of the Galaxy S25 series. Rumors say it might measure 6.4mm.
But let's get back to the present for a moment and leave the upcoming Galaxy S25 Edge to the side. What actually are the thinnest sub-8mm Samsung phones that are commercially available right now? Here's your answer, from thinnest to thickest (up to 8mm).
Counting every smartphone Samsung ever made – including those no longer commercially available or supported – the record holder is from ten years ago.
The Galaxy A8 (2015) remains the thinnest smartphone Samsung has ever manufactured. It had an advertised thinness of only 5.9mm, with a frame that was barely thick enough to accommodate a 3.5mm headphone port.
Samsung's smartphones have become unbelievably stronger in recent years, so it would be quite a feat if the upcoming Galaxy S25 Edge gets close to or beats the Galaxy A8 while retaining the durability of Samsung's modern flagships.
It's also worth noting that the old Galaxy A8 (2015) had a 3,050mAh battery, while the upcoming Galaxy S25 Edge is said to feature a 3,900mAh unit.
We should find out more about the Galaxy S25 Edge in the coming weeks or months. Rumor has it that Samsung intends to release it in April.
