RIYADH — Advisor at the Royal Court, Supervisor General of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, and Head of the Medical and Surgical Team of the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah said that condition of the Somali conjoined twins Rahma and Ramla was stable four days after their successful surgical separation. The complex surgery was held at the King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City affiliated with Ministry of the National Guard in Riyadh.Dr. Al-Rabeeah said that Rahma’s breathing has returned to normal, prompting the medical team to remove the artificial ventilation devices and feeding tubes. She is now breathing normally without external ventilation, and her other vital signs have stabilized. Within the coming two days, she is expected to begin natural breastfeeding and may leave the intensive care unit in the coming days.Regarding Ramla, he noted that due to the incomplete development of her urinary system, kidney atrophy, and her need for hemodialysis to remove excess fluids from her body, she remains on artificial ventilation. He noted that the medical team reported that her condition is stable and that her surgical status is reassuring. The ventilator is expected to be removed on Tuesday, after which she will continue intermittent hemodialysis as needed, and gradual feeding by mouth will begin, similar to her sister. Dr. Al-Rabeeah said that the twins’ condition is very reassuring and their surgical status is good, with no concerning indicators for the medical and surgical team. He added that they may remain in the intensive care unit for three to five days before being transferred to the pediatric ward to begin gradual medical rehabilitation.
