JEDDAH — When we walk past a public waste bin, we rarely give it a second thought. For Nelly Almaktoum, however, a public waste bin sparked a question that would consume a year of research and eventually lead to an award-winning invention. For her, it begins with discipline. "As a child, if I had a question, I would keep searching for it," she recalled. "I didn't just want to know the answer — I wanted to know how and why. "My goal wasn't to put every technology possible into a bin," she explained. "I made sure every component solved an actual problem. If people aren't willing to interact with the solution, then I'm not really solving anything at all." Despite the project's potential, Almaktoum's motivation had little to do with financial success. "I didn't build it for the money," she said. "I built it so I can actually solve a real problem that we have here in Jeddah." That purpose has already taken her further than she expected. Her ambition is to develop smarter systems capable of helping cities like Jeddah — and eventually emerging smart cities across Saudi Arabia — become more efficient and sustainable. The technology may become more sophisticated and the challenges more ambitious, but Almaktoum's philosophy remains the same as the one that started Aykah: notice what others walk past, ask why it cannot be better, and then try to build the answer.
