RIYADH — The Saudi Ministry of Health emphasized the importance of receiving the meningococcal vaccine before performing Umrah during the holy month of Ramadan, which marks the annual peak Umrah season. The ministry’s advisory is part of preventative health measures aimed at protecting pilgrims, especially given the overcrowding at the Grand Mosque during the fasting month. The ministry explained that crowded places increase the likelihood of infection transmission, most notably meningococcal disease, which is transmitted through respiratory droplets and can lead to serious health complications if it left untreated. It stressed that getting vaccinated is an essential step to protect the pilgrim's health and safety. The Ministry of Health, through its official account on the X platform, clarified that the vaccine should be received at least 10 days before performing Umrah to ensure immunity develops and achieve the best level of protection during the pilgrimage. The ministry indicated that the meningococcal vaccine provides immunity for up to 5 years, contributing to enhanced personal protection and reducing the transmission of infection among pilgrims. The ministry urged those wishing to perform Umrah to book an appointment in advance through the Sehhaty application and to go to designated vaccination clinics to receive the vaccine easily and conveniently. It emphasized that if the vaccine was received within the past five years, there is no need to repeat the dose, as long as it is within the specified protection period. The ministry stressed that adhering to health guidelines and recommended vaccinations reflects the pilgrim's awareness and concern for their own safety and the safety of others, contributing to performing the rituals in a safe and healthy environment.
