RIYADH — The Saudi Traffic Department has clarified the regulations governing right turns at a red traffic light. The department emphasized that drivers must stop before making a turn to ensure the intersection is clear of vehicles and give way to oncoming traffic. If a triangular road marking is present at the corner of the intersection, the turn must be made before reaching it. Making the turn after the triangle is considered running a red light. Drivers must also remain in the right lane before turning if the road is a main road without a service road. The department explained that when a main road is accompanied by a service road, the turn must be made onto the service road, while remaining in the right lane before making the turn. Drivers are also prohibited from turning right when a flashing red arrow or a “No Right Turn” sign is displayed while the traffic light is red. Such a violation is considered running a red light. Running a red light is among the most serious traffic violations in Saudi Arabia due to the significant risk it poses to the safety of drivers, pedestrians, and other road users. The General Directorate of Traffic has established penalties and procedures for traffic light violations, while also providing electronic services for inquiring about and appealing violations in accordance with applicable regulations. In Saudi Arabia, fines are imposed on drivers who run a red light, as stipulated by the Traffic Law. In Saudi Arabia, running a red light is punishable by a fine of SR3,000 to SR6,000 under the Traffic Law’s violation schedule. The amount of the fine varies according to the type of violation and the circumstances surrounding it, in line with the approved schedule of violations. The regulations underscore the importance of complying with traffic signals to reduce accidents and safeguard lives and property.
