Samsung Display's plans to install a second Gen 8 OLED deposition unit at its A6 manufacturing line have reportedly been delayed. The reason might be Apple. Nevertheless, the Korean tech giant will soon expand its Gen 8 OLED manufacturing capabilities.
Reports say that Samsung Display has extended its contract with Gen 8 OLED manufacturing equipment supplier Canon Tokki by five months (via The Elec). The original 30 billion won ($20 million) contract was supposed to expire this month. However, due to delays, the contract had to be extended.
Japan's Canon Tokki already supplied Samsung Display with a Gen 8 OLED deposition machine — now installed at the A6 line. This first unit is used by Samsung to manufacture OLED sample panels for devices larger than smartphones, such as laptops.
More importantly, the existing Gen 8 OLED deposition machine will be reserved for one of Samsung Display's biggest customers, Apple. This machine is expected to manufacture OLED panels for the 2026 MacBook Pro.
Meanwhile, Samsung intends to use the second Gen 8 OLED deposition machine for panels destined for other clients besides Apple — presumably, Dell and HP are among those clients.
The second unit supplied by Canon Tokki is expected to be installed at A6 before the second half of 2025.
According to reports, that Samsung Display's delay was partly caused by Apple's decision to release the first OLED MacBook Air later than originally planned. New reports say that the first OLED MacBook Air will be out in 2029. Until then, the MacBook Air line will enjoy LCD panel improvements.
