It's already known that Samsung is working on smart glasses and an XR headset. The company is collaborating closely with Google on these devices, as they'll run Android XR, a new iteration of Android for extended reality devices.
Samsung has already showcased its Project Moohan XR headset and while its smart glasses have remained under wraps for now, Google has shared some great insight this week as to what they might be capable of. A new report indicates Apple's coming out with smart glasses next year as well, but they won't offer powerful features like Samsung's.
Bloomberg reports that Apple will launch a pair of smart glasses in 2026. They'll feature cameras, microphones, and speakers, enabling users to “analyze the external world and take requests via the Siri voice assistant.”
Other features may include the ability to take phone calls, handle music playback, do live translations, and provide assistance with directions. They won't have any AR features, so Apple fans shouldn't expect any projections on the lens. This means that Apple's first smart glasses would be quite similar in their functionality to Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses.
Google provided a deep dive into the Android XR experience on smart glasses, the kind that Samsung is building. Gemini AI will be deeply integrated, and when summoned, it will project the Gemini user interface on the lens.
So language translations, directions, and even Google Maps navigation will be overlayed on the user's real-world view. This, and a lot more, will be made possible by the AR features that Apple's smart glasses won't have, at least in their first iteration.
Samsung may also beat Apple to the market, as current reports suggests that we may see its first ever smart glasses being unveiled alongside the Project Moohan XR headset later this year.
