Chicago has the second largest police force in the United States, and such, they require a lot of technological support to get their vital job done. Samsung has proven to be a solid technology partner for the force as Chicago PD now uses 10,000 Galaxy phones to securely access critical resources.
In addition to using Samsung's mobile devices, the force also relies on Samsung DeX and Samsung Knox to ensure reliable and secure communication links as they go on about securing Chicago's neighborhoods.
Samsung's collaboration with Chicago PD has been ongoing since 2018. It started with the replacement of computers in cop cars with the in-vehicle version of Samsung's DeX platform. The city's entire fleet of law enforcement is now equipped with Samsung's solutions, and similar solutions are now being expanded to the Chicago Fire Department.
Data security is a big part of the job, as officers routinely run people's names, their license plates, and also log into their official systems. Data leaks and HIPAA compliance is a real concern, but with Samsung's robust Knox security platform, Chicago PD is able to get its job done with utmost security.
“Thanks to Samsung DeX, we went from 3,000 vehicle-mounted laptops to around 10,000 Galaxy S-series phones that are now either assigned to officers or in a specific vehicle on a daily basis,” said Dennis Baliga, Deputy Director of IT Infrastructure, City of Chicago’s Office of Public Safety Administration.
Officers can use the equipment to securely and quickly access specialized information when they're out in the field. This includes state and local databases, city licensing and permitting, and manuals like the Department of Transportation hazmat guide, all through apps, eliminating the need for officers to carry bulky books.
