Samsung has dropped support for the Galaxy A42 5G and will not release any updates for the four-year-old phone going forward. Depending on your country of residence, the last update the Galaxy A42 5G received was back in June or July.
The A42 5G hit retail shelves in November 2020 and was promised updates for four years, so support is ending at the expected time. The last phone in the Galaxy A4x lineup, the A42 was eligible for two major Android OS upgrades, a security update every three months for the first two years, and just two updates annually after that.
Now, it's time to bid adieu. Samsung published details of the December 2024 security update for Galaxy devices this week and has scrubbed the Galaxy A42 from the list of smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and laptops that will continue to get updates in the future.
If using outdated software isn't your thing, it's time for an upgrade. There are plenty of excellent mid-range Samsung phones to choose from in different price brackets this year. You even have the option of a budget phone—the Galaxy A16—that will get six major Android OS upgrades and security updates for as many number of years!
