You don't need a deep dive into social media to notice that the vocal majority of people commenting on the recent Galaxy S27 Ultra leaks is dissatisfied with the purported design.

Of course, nothing's final until Samsung says it is. And as we witnessed numerous times in the past, the final product usually — if not always — exceeds early design expectations.

Even so, the leaks reveal a significant design change that goes well beyond surface aesthetics. The phone will feature a new, enlarged, horizontal camera island that's unlike anything we've seen on a Samsung phone before.

This new camera bump design is the main source of dissatisfaction among fans who have shared their thoughts on those leaks, but is the Galaxy S27 Ultra in as bad a spot as people say?

Aesthetics are heavily subjective, so whether you like the alleged look of the Galaxy S27 Ultra is up to you.

We won't try to convince you that the phone looks a certain way, but we do want to approach Samsung's redesign from a more objective angle. Let's forget about aesthetics for a moment and try to answer one particular question:

What practical benefits could the Galaxy S27 Ultra's wide camera housing bring?

For one, if Samsung borrows Apple's idea, it could use the large camera island to house some of the internal hardware. If true, we could enjoy better performance and cooling.

However, whether Samsung's camera housing will serve this function is anyone's guess. For all we know so far, the entire camera island could be a plastic rectangle glued to the back of the device.

Which brings us to the more obvious practical benefit the Galaxy S27 Ultra's camera redesign could bring: a phone that doesn't wobble as much, or at all, when resting on your desk or table.

You're all familiar with the phenomenon, especially if you don't keep your phone wrapped in a thick protective case. Some of Samsung's latest camera housing designs are so prominent and lopsided that modern Galaxy phones cannot sit flat on a table. It's not a big issue unless you try to tap the screen without lifting and holding your phone.

It's worse on some Galaxy phones than others. Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold 8 is probably the wobbliest phone the company's ever made. Not only does it feature a thick camera assembly, but it also has a short and stubby form factor that makes it even wobblier.

Say what you will about the leaked Galaxy S27 Ultra aesthetics, but the phone might finally put an end to the undesired wobbliness byproduct of modern camera designs. If the S27 Ultra's camera rings themselves won't stand out too much, then the rectangular, wide camera housing could stably support the entire upper half of the phone and eliminate the wobble effect.

All in all, while those early Galaxy S27 Ultra renders seem to have made some fans unhappy, the dissatisfaction stems from the aesthetics alone, so there is a heavy element of subjectivity to everyone's reaction.

But there is a chance that future Galaxy S27 Ultra users who might be on the fence about the camera island now will end up loving its practical benefits once they get to use the phone. More importantly, the Ultra won't be alone.

The Galaxy S27 Pro is also rumored to feature a similar, wide camera housing, so it could offer a similar user experience as the Ultra. If this camera redesign proves successful, it may also be adopted by other 2027 models such as the Galaxy Z Fold 9, which would probably need it the most.

We could bet witnessing the beginnings of a new design chapter for Samsung's Galaxy phones. And it might not be all doom and gloom as some suggests. Time will tell.

As usual, we'll continue chiming in on future leaks but we'll reserve our final judgment for our review and future editorials. We will surely attend next year's Galaxy Unpacked event and share our findings and thoughts on the redesigned camera.
