It has been more than two years since Samsung started teasing its first extended reality (XR) headset based on Android XR, but the devices hasn't launched yet. Samsung had reportedly planned to launch it in 2024, but the launch was delayed to make further improvements to the device, likely in response to the Apple Vision Pro.
While the company hinted about them launching this year, Google has announced in clearer terms when you can expect to buy the XR headset.
At the Google I/O 2025 keynote event a few hours ago, Shahram Izadi, the vice president of the Android XR platform at Google, announced that Samsung's Project Moohan headset will be available for purchase later this year. They also announced that it will officially be the first device to run Android XR and that Google built Android XR together as one team in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm.
Project Moohan is likely not the final name of Samsung's XR headset. The South Korean firm might announce its actual name during its launch later this year. There is still no word on its pricing, but our guess says it could be priced considerably lower than the pricing of the $3,500 Apple Vision Pro.
Google's executive also revealed that Android XR can run on a broad range of wearable devices, including video see-through headsets, optical see-through headsets, AR glasses, and AI glasses. However, XR headsets like Project Moohan will be the best fit for productivity and entertainment.
It has been revealed that Project Moohan likely uses a pair of 1.3-inch OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) displays, each with 4K resolution, a pixel density of 3,800ppi, and a 90Hz refresh rate. The headset uses the 4nm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip fabricated by Samsung Foundry. It also features at least half a dozen cameras, stereo speakers, a metal frame, and an external power source with a USB Type-C port.
Shahram Izadi said that hundreds of third-party app developers, including Calm and MLB, have been developing apps for Android XR since its first Developer Preview version was released last year. All your favorite Google apps, including Chrome, Gemini, Gmail, Google Search, Google Photos, Google TV, Maps, Meet, Play Store, and YouTube, will be optimized for Android XR for an immersive experience. Mobile and tablet apps will also work on the device.
Gemini is a centerpiece in Android XR, and it is always “present by your side” to help you. It understands context and your intent to bring you the most relevant information, such as webpages and videos about the things you are seeing.
What isn't clear yet is how headsets like Project Moohan will integrate with other Android devices like Galaxy smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and TVs. Will it have special integrations with Samsung's TVs? Questions like these will likely be answered only when the headset launches later this year.
