Meta has released several experimental apps in the past only to shut them down a few years later. However, it looks like it has a clear long-term plan for its newest app, Edits. It is made by Instagram and is focused on making things a lot easier for you to create Reels, which are shortform portrait videos that were popularized by TikTok.
The company revealed Edits a few weeks ago, but it wasn't available for download back them. Today, the app was released for Android and iOS smartphones, and you can download Edits on your Galaxy smartphone via the Google Play Store.
Edits is a video creation and editing app that aims to make it extremely easy for anyone to create Reels. Instagram said it is only the first step in that direction, and it will continue to improve the app and bring many more features after receiving feedback from users.
The new app lets you record up to 10-minute-long high-quality videos. On some recent high-end Galaxy phones, like the Galaxy S24 Ultra, it supports recording 4K 60fps videos using all the cameras, while on the Galaxy S23 Ultra we tested, it supported 4K 30fps videos. On recently released iPhones, it supports up to 4K 60fps videos in SDR or HDR.
Instagram said one of its focus with Edits was to save you from the hassle of using multiple apps to record and edit videos. So, it offers all the possible tools and options within the same app. That includes elaborate project management, frame-accurate timeline with clip-level editing, auto enhancements for videos, green screen, transition effects, and the ability to export directly to Facebook and Instagram.
To bring all these features, the company said it has been working with certain creators over the past year, tested several concepts, and incorporated their feedback.
In the future, the company aims to bring improvements to keyframes, AI-powered effects, the ability to easily share drafts with others, and more creativity options (filters, fonts, music options, voice effects, text animations, and transitions).
