Getting a folding phone onto a stage and getting enough finished phones off a production line are two different challenges. Reports about the iPhone Duo suggest Apple is confronting the second, and they make Samsung’s years of foldable manufacturing experience worth a closer look.

A September 21 report put the iPhone Duo’s whole-device assembly yield at just over 60%, citing a source close to Foxconn’s supply chain. Separate supply-chain reporting described difficulties producing hinges and the backplate supporting the folding panel.

These reports remain unconfirmed, and the assembly figure is not a prediction of how many customers will receive faulty phones.

But they raise a useful question: what separates an ambitious foldable design from a product that can be manufactured consistently? A sophisticated hinge is only useful when it works properly with the display and surrounding structure.

That is where Samsung’s experience becomes interesting.

Samsung began selling the Galaxy Fold in 2019. Across its first seven generations of foldables, it refined the Fold and Flip families, learning from different hinge designs, display structures and two very different ways of folding a phone.

The hinge’s evolution is a useful example. Samsung’s account of that history traces the Fold 2’s Hideaway Hinge through the Fold 4’s move away from gears and the Fold 5’s Flex Hinge, which allowed the phone to close without a gap. Each change had to make it into a finished phone, with the hinge, screen and body fitting together properly.

For consumers, the benefits were tangible. A gap-free design made the folded phone slimmer and easier to carry. Successive generations gave Samsung opportunities to improve how the mechanism fits into the device, while keeping the larger folding screen that people buy these phones for.

Samsung then took that experience beyond phones with a single fold. The Galaxy Z TriFold added a second hinge, making the relationship between the hinges, display and body more complicated again.

Samsung’s manufacturing video shows what that means in practice for the TriFold. Its two differently sized hinges are assembled using automated systems, while 3D laser scanning checks the display surface.

Samsung also uses CT scans to inspect the flexible circuit board before it is attached to the display. The main display was put through 200,000 folding cycles during durability testing to assess its long-term reliability.

Those TriFold checks are easy to overlook in a specification comparison. They help Samsung identify manufacturing problems before the phone is fully assembled. Together with what Samsung learned from Fold and Flip, this is the kind of experience it brings to the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

For the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung has also described refinements to the phone’s parts and manufacturing process. These show how much attention goes into the parts buyers rarely see.

As we explored in our article about the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s weight advantage over the iPhone Duo, Samsung says it eliminated roughly 15 types of auxiliary parts and combined others to save weight and space. That helps make a large-screen foldable easier to hold and carry.

The less visible changes matter just as much. Samsung also refined how it makes the thinner metal supports beneath the display so they stay flat and fit precisely during production.

It’s a small but important detail that helps Samsung make the Fold 8 slimmer while maintaining the structure supporting its screen.

Samsung does not provide a comparable assembly-yield figure, so there is no numerical production advantage to claim here. What we can see is a succession of practical refinements, from how the phone folds to how its thinner parts are made and checked.

For Apple, the immediate challenge is producing its first foldable in large numbers while keeping quality consistent. Samsung’s experience has helped make foldables thinner, more practical and better suited to everyday use.

For anyone choosing a foldable they intend to use for years, that experience deserves a place in the comparison alongside the specifications.
