In 2019, Samsung launched the Galaxy Fold 5G, the world’s first foldable smartphone for the mass market. Since then, all the foldable phones that the brand has launched have been considered the best foldable phones overall, beating their competitors consistently. However, there’s one thing people have been complaining about Samsung’s foldable phones, which is that they aren’t thin enough.
Chinese brands, on the other hand, have been praised for offering very thin foldable phones, such as the Huawei Mate X6, which is only 9.9mm thin. That’s way thinner than Samsung’s latest foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. Well, Oppo’s upcoming foldable phone, the Find N5, takes the thinness to the next level, putting Samsung’s foldable phones to shame.
Oppo’s Product Manager for the Find Series, Zhou Yibao, has posted images of the company’s upcoming flagship foldable phones, the Find N5, on Weibo. As you can see, when opened, the phone is extremely thin, thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, with four stacked credit cards, and two stacked quarters, which is quite impressive.
In fact, the Find N5 is barely thicker than the USB Type-C port on the device. Yibao also says that the thickness of the USB Type-C port is limiting how thin the Find N5 could be. Unfortunately, he didn’t mention the thickness of the device. However, going by the images, it looks like the side of the phone shown in photos is 3-4mm thin.
Considering that the other side will be equally thin, the thickness of the Find N5 will be around 8mm. That means it is much thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition and it will also be thinner than Samsung's next bookstyle foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is rumored to be 8.6mm thin. All of this despite it being rumored to feature a massive, 5,700mAh battery and IPX9 durability rating. That's very impressive.
Samsung will have to step up and bring thinner foldable phones to stay competitive in the market, as many people buy foldable phones as a lifestyle accessory. Hopefully, the company will launch a special edition of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 which will beat competitors from the Chinese brands in terms of thickness. For now, all eyes are on Samsung's next Galaxy Unpacked event, where it will launch the Galaxy S25 series.
