Canalys has just published an analysis about the global smartphone shipments in 2024, and it brings some good news for Samsung.
According to the firm, Apple shipped 225.9 million iPhones in 2024 globally, which gave it an 18% market share and the top position on the chart. Samsung shipped 222.9 million Galaxy smartphones, giving it too an 18% market share.
As you can see, Samsung was only three million units short of beating Apple to take the crown for the top smartphone brand in 2024. In 2023, the gap between the two brands was around five million units with Apple having the upper hand.
In third position is Xiaomi with 168. 6 million shipments and a 14% market share. In the fourth position is Transsion with 106.7 million shipments and 9% market share. Oppo came in at fifth with 103.6 million shipments and 8% market share.

It is worth mentioning that while Samsung closed the gap with Apple, the South Korean tech giant shipped around 2.6 million fewer Galaxy smartphones this year compared to the last year. Its market share also dropped from the last year, when it was 20%.
According to Canalys, the iPhone 15 was the highest shipped smartphone in 2024. As for Samsung’s devices, in the first, second, and third positions are the Galaxy A15, Galaxy A15 5G, and Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Samsung seems to have done quite well when you consider that the company equipped two of the three devices in its flagship lineup of non-foldable smartphones for 2024, which also happens to be one of its top-sellers, with an Exynos SoC rather than a Snapdragon chipset for which it received a lot of backlash.
This year, all three devices in Samsung’s non-foldable lineup of flagship smartphones have a Snapdragon processor. That should help the company sell more devices than the previous year.
