Imagine if there was a way that your kid could remain connected with you, be able to call and text, even if they're not of the age yet where you'd give them a phone. Samsung has teamed up with Google to come up with an answer to this problem. It's a new mode called Galaxy Watch for Kids.
What it basically does is allow parents to use their cellular-enabled smartwatch to keep connected to their kids and check up on their location without needing a smartphone. Google's participation was needed here as the Galaxy Watch is powered by the Android-based WearOS.
With the Galaxy Watch set to Kids mode, children will be able to use it to call and text with trusted contacts. Parents can also be in peace of mind regarding their location through GPS tracking. This feature is currently available for AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile subscribers.
Parents can also use the Family Link up on their phone to approve or block what apps their kids can download on the watch. An app can even be blocked once it's been installed. There are options to limit functionality during school hours so that the kids are not distracted in class.
20 new “teacher approved” apps have also been launched for WearOS. They're available from the Kids section of the Play Store. These include apps from Barbie, Crayola, and Marvel, all aimed at promoting activity and learning in fun, thoughtful ways.
Parents with older smartwatches are out of luck, though. The Galaxy Watch for Kids mode is only available on the LTE Galaxy Watch 7. Buy it now from Samsung if you don't already have one to take full advantage of this age-appropriate Galaxy Watch experience for kids.
