Samsung has introduced a new cloud backup feature for WeChat, and One UI 9.5 is set to bring it to more devices. But whether Galaxy users outside China will get it remains unclear.
Samsung is promoting the feature for the Samsung W27, the company’s more premium Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra variant for the Chinese market. Samsung’s accompanying disclaimer also mentions models that can later upgrade to One UI 9.5, though it doesn’t name specific devices.
Samsung has teamed up with Baidu Netdisk to let users back up their WeChat chat history to the cloud. Text, voice messages, emojis, and received files can be backed up automatically. Samsung says the data is encrypted during both transmission and storage.
The idea is simple: if you lose your phone, damage it, or switch to a new Samsung device, you can restore your conversations from the cloud.
The feature sits under Settings » Accounts and backup, where a new WeChat backup and restore option appears. Despite its location alongside Samsung’s other backup options, the cloud storage is handled by Baidu Netdisk rather than Samsung Cloud.
The interface lets users create a backup, download an existing backup, and restore it to their phone. It also says new backups add newly created content to the data already backed up. Restoring a backup, however, overwrites the WeChat data currently stored on the device.
That’s the big question, and the announcement doesn’t provide an answer. Everything shown so far revolves around WeChat and Baidu Netdisk, which suggests this is a feature aimed at users in China.
The One UI 9.5 reference tells us Samsung plans to support more devices beyond the W27. It doesn’t establish that every Galaxy device receiving the update will get the feature, or that it will be available worldwide.
Should Samsung bring the feature to other markets, it could use a different cloud storage provider, such as Google Drive, instead of Baidu Netdisk. That’s just speculation for now, though.
Samsung’s announcement doesn’t confirm availability outside China, and it’s unclear whether a wider release would include support for messaging apps other than WeChat.
