Sustainability is a stated goal for Samsung Electronics. The company has strived to reduce the environmental footprint of its devices and has made many changes in everything from the packaging to the materials used in manufacturing in order to achieve this goal.

Major companies often want to undertake such initiatives on their own terms. It's when the terms begin to be dictated, whether by a rival or a government, do they express their displeasure. Samsung is among some of the world's leading companies that are not too happy with the new e-waste policy of India.

The government has implemented new rules that will force companies like Samsung, LG, Daikin, and others to pay a lot more money for recycling ACs, refrigerators, TVs, and other appliances. These companies have urged officials to withdraw the rules. Four companies, not including Samsung, have gone so far as to sue the government as they feel this would exacerbate compliance issues.

These rules impose a floor price that these companies must pay to the recyclers. The affected companies feel that their recycling costs will approximately triple as a result of these actions. The ones that have sued the government feel that these policies were implemented to provide financial gain to recyclers at their expense.

While Samsung hasn't sued the government, a Reuters reports claims that it has told senior Indian officials that the policies would increase its recycling rates from five to 15 times. The company has also urged the government to avoid interfering in the commercial dealings with the recyclers.

The government doesn't seem to be in any mood to back down, as it has kept firm on the policies and has even called for the lawsuits against it to be dismissed.
