Just one day before the launch of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung has reached a settlement with Epic Games related to a security feature introduced with One UI 6.0. As a part of this settlement, the South Korean firm has agreed to address Epic Games' concerns related to app sideloading restrictions on Galaxy phones and tablets.
A few hours ago, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said the company is dismissing its court case against Samsung. They said that following discussions between the two firms, Samsung has agreed to address Epic Games' concerns. While they didn't reveal the specifics of the settlement, it is likely related to the Auto Blocker feature on Samsung phones that is turned on by default and makes it harder for people to sideload apps and app stores (like Epic Games Store).
Two years ago, Samsung introduced a security feature called Auto Blocker. It blocks messages with malicious code and links in them, checks security of app and games, and blocks commands sent by a USB cable. More importantly, it blocks the installation of apps from app stores that haven't been whitelisted by Samsung. One such app store is Epic Games Store that was launched last year.
Epic Games went ahead and sued Samsung over this Auto Blocker feature, alleging that the South Korean firm is working with Google to undermine third-party app and game stores. The company made it clear that Samsung should not turn the feature on by default or whitelist honest app stores that allow them to install apps without any barrier. It isn't clear if the South Korean firm has agreed to make either of those changes, but we would like to think so, considering that Epic Games has dropped its case.
It is also possible that Samsung will preload Epic Games Store on Galaxy phones and tablets in select markets, given that there were rumours of that happening. Whatever it is, the matter will get clear after the launch of the Galaxy Z Flip 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
