The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is Samsung’s latest clamshell foldable, and one of its best features is immediately obvious the moment you lay eyes on it: the larger cover display.
The cover screen now stretches edge to edge, with ultra-slim bezels and a beautiful design that wraps around the two camera lenses. The cover displays on the Flip 5 and Flip 6 weren’t exactly small, but the difference here is hard to ignore. The Flip 7 looks a lot more modern and premium at a glance.
The extra screen estate isn't just for show. It genuinely improves the experience, allowing you to see more content at once; if you use full apps on the cover screen, the bigger size makes it easier to tap UI elements such as buttons and menus and makes everything look and feel less cramped.
But what I love most about the Galaxy Z Flip 7 cover display isn't its size. It's the refresh rate. The cover display supports a 120Hz refresh rate, and for me, that's the real upgrade.
High refresh rate displays have become standard across Samsung’s smartphones over the last half a decade. And once you get used to the smooth scrolling and animations, it's hard to go back. The typical 60Hz refresh rate begins to feels rather sluggish, which is especially true if you also use high refresh rate monitors or TVs.
On previous Galaxy Z Flip models, only the main foldable display supported 120Hz. The cover screen was stuck at 60Hz, and switching between the two was quite jarring. With the Flip 7, that inconsistency is finally gone.
I wasn't expecting Samsung to bump up the refresh rate on the outer screen. But it was certainly on my wishlist, especially after a few other manufacturers introduced flip phones with two high refresh rate displays, and I'm glad that Samsung finally made the same move.
It makes the overall experience feel more seamless and premium and brings the cover display up to par with the rest of the phone. The cover screen is no longer just there for convenience, it's something I actively want to use.
