Qualcomm and Samsung may be more codependent today than at any point in their long partnership. Speaking at the Snapdragon Elite Media Day earlier this month, Chris Patrick, Senior VP at Qualcomm, underscored just how central that relationship has become.
The two companies have been working together since the mid-1990s, and Patrick noted that Samsung Galaxy has come to represent that enduring collaboration.
Samsung Galaxy symbolizes the long-standing collaboration between the two companies.
One key lesson Qualcomm says it has learned is that great products rarely come together through isolated efforts. Instead, they require tight coordination from day one.
One example Qualcomm offered was the modern smartphone. Mobile devices are incredibly complex systems, and Qualcomm believes successful devices demand sustained co-development, often stretching across months or even years for each generation. And, of course, this level of transparency requires trust.
That philosophy is reflected in Snapdragon “for Galaxy” chips. While these processors are based on standard Snapdragon platforms, they are fine-tuned in close partnership with Samsung specifically for Galaxy devices, and they generally operate at slightly higher frequencies for improved performance.
The result is a more tailored experience, shaped by both hardware and software optimization rather than off-the-shelf components.
The collaboration has also expanded beyond smartphones. In the growing XR space, Samsung's new Galaxy XR headset was built in partnership with both Google and Qualcomm. Google contributes the Android XR platform, while Qualcomm powers the device with its Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, highlighting a three-way effort to push into mixed reality.
Looking ahead, the partnership could extend into entirely new territory. Qualcomm recently introduced its Dragonwing IQ10 chips aimed at robotics and is reportedly in discussions with Samsung and other Korean firms about potential collaborations in that sector.
If anything is clear, it is that Qualcomm and Samsung are not just maintaining their relationship, they are deepening it. As new categories like XR and robotics take shape, the two companies appear committed to tackling increasingly complex challenges together, with the shared goal of delivering more refined and capable consumer technologies.
