Meta has announced support for passkeys for its Facebook and Messenger apps on Android and iOS devices. It means you can create passkeys for those apps and save them to the passkeys app of your choice, which includes Samsung Pass. That will make the login process easier and more secure than earlier.

Samsung Pass, which is a free app that comes preloaded on Galaxy phones and tablets, can store passkeys for your accounts and apps.

On its blog, Meta announced that Facebook and Facebook Messenger apps will soon support passkeys. It means once you create a passkey for the app and save it in the Samsung Pass (or any other supported) app on your Galaxy smartphone or tablet, you can log into those apps simply by using the same face scan, fingerprint or PIN that you use to unlock your phone.

Since passkeys have proven to be generally more secure than traditional passwords, they will guard your Facebook account in a better way. Meta says support passkeys for the Facebook app will roll out soon on Android and iOS devices, while support for the Messenger app will be made available in the coming months. The same passkeys will work on both the apps.

You can create your Facebook account passkey by navigating to the Accounts Center page in the app's Settings menu. You may also be prompted to create a passkey when you log into the Facebook app on your Galaxy phone or tablet.

Passkey is a digital credential that is automatically created by a compatible app. You can store a passkey it in a password manager like 1Password, Dashlane, or Samsung Pass. When logging into an app that supports a passkey, it requests for a passkey via the app on your phone, and you have to enter the same biometrics that you use to unlock your phone to allow the requesting app to use the passkey stored on your device.

This method is generally more secure than traditional passwords that can be more easily guessed or stolen by an attacker. The technology behind passkeys was developed by the FIDO Alliance, which Meta is a part of. FIDO Alliance is an open industry association that aims to reduce the world's reliance on passwords.

Your Meta account's passkeys can also be used while making a purchase to autofill payment information via Meta Pay. Even when you create a passkey, you can still use your password to log into your Meta account.
