AI has become central to almost every product that Samsung Electronics is launching these days. Galaxy AI is integral to the mobile experience, while AI features are also being expanded to products like TVs, speakers, and even home appliances.
It may seem like everything has an AI sticker right now even if it may not make much sense. TM Roh, CEO of Samsung Electronics and head of its mobile division, it's important to not overestimate a technology's short-term impact and underestimate its long-term potential.
Roh has expressed his thoughts on the matter in an opinion piece carried by the Wall Street Journal. He writes that it's important to advance AI without losing sight of developing it from a mere invention to a bona fide infrastructure.
Trust is essential for AI. People use it for the most personal tasks, from editing their photos to analyzing documents and even healthcare records. It's thus incumbent upon AI's builders to ensure that AI serves everyone diligently, including the most vulnerable users.
A key point that Roh makes is that people should have to think how they need to operate AI to extract the most out of it. “That is why the best AI often stays in the background,” he says, pointing out that the less visible AI is, the more universal the experience feels.
Roh feels that this will be the foundation for the coming phase of agentic AI. The focus now must be on buildling solutions that carry tasks to their logical completion, not just provide answers to the queries users put in.
